Information for Clinicians Evaluating Evacuees Form Hurricane Katrina
Although at this time no governmentally organized evacuations of displaced persons from Katrina have arrived in Washington State, it is estimated that up to 800 persons may have arrived in the State through their own means. Some of these persons are being directed to sources of health care in the community by social service agencies and/or the American Red Cross. Reports from states that have received Katrina evacuees describe a spectrum of health problems including acute injuries and wounds, infectious diseases, chronic medical problems, and mental health and chemical dependency issues. The information in this message is intended to assist King County health care professionals who evaluate persons displaced by hurricane Katrina.
Click here for a medical intake and screening form (PDF) developed for use by public health teams evaluating evacuees and based on the CDC screening form. This form highlights potential health conditions that would be of concern in this population. Please also review information at the CDC's hurricane Katrina web page for health care professionals. This page contains useful clinical information on a variety of topics.
The 3 links below are also accessible from the health care professional main page.
Please report to Public Health any conditions of public health importance among Katrina evacuees including noitifiable infectious diseases, suspected outbreaks, and other rare conditions of public health significance by calling 206-296-4774 and asking for the hurricane Katrina epidemiologist.
