WORK LOCATIONS: Various parks and facilities maintained throughout King County. Please see Worksite Preference Form for available locations.

 

WORK SCHEDULE: This position works up to forty hours per week; various shifts available.  Shifts may include weekends and evenings. Parks’ season typically runs from March 1 – October 15.

 

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES INCLUDE: Provide a clean and safe park environment for visitors by being responsible for maintenance work in assigned County park areas involving grounds, facilities, athletic fields and supportive equipment operation.  Work will be performed outdoors and in inclement weather. Punctuality and regular attendance are required in this position in order to provide dependable service to the public.

General Duties include:

• Safely operate and maintain equipment such as weed eaters, power blowers, push mowers, and edgers.
• Safely operate park maintenance vehicles, such as trucks, mowers, small utility vehicles, etc.
• Provide for the welfare and safety of park visitors by giving assistance and information to patrons, including park rules and regulations.
• Assist plumbers, carpenters, electricians and equipment operators with various assignments.

 

Park District Maintenance Duties:

• Maintain parks grounds and trails, by trimming, mowing, clearing, and removing litter and debris.
• Maintain and prepare athletic fields, arenas, play areas, picnic shelters, restrooms and other park facilities.
• Provide custodial care of buildings and structures by sweeping, vacuuming and setting up for events, and other related activities.

 

Natural Resource Area Duties:

• Maintain trails and natural resource areas by trimming, mowing, clearing, and removing debris.
• Fish and wildlife habitat restoration.
• Install and maintain plantings; noxious weed control.
• Back country trail maintenance and repairs, natural area monitoring, and natural area cleanup.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

• Ability to work with and provide customer service to the public and volunteer groups.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Basic skill in operating small manual and power hand tools.
• Ability to bend, kneel, stand, reach, climb, stoop, squat, push, twist and repetitively lift up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to walk several miles a day and work on uneven terrain
• Ability to perform basic measurements and math, and basic computer skills.
• Experience with landscaping, gardening, athletic field maintenance, or other park maintenance experience highly desired.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain punctual, reliable and regular attendance.

 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• A valid driver's license is required to operate King County vehicles; operators of King County vehicles must be 18 years or older
• A final offer of employment will be contingent upon successfully passing a pre-employment physical and a background check, which includes criminal and driving histories.
• King County employees work in an alcohol and drug free environment.
• King County Parks Employees are not permitted to carry weapons on Park property.

Thank you for your interest in the Seasonal Parks Maintenance Worker position.  The salary wage starts at $12.60 per hour (2007 rates). The position requires the ability to perform duties involving physical labor including bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, stooping, squatting, pushing, twisting and repetitively lifting up to 50 lbs.  The Parks season generally runs from March to October.

King County has 235 parks and natural resource lands.  Operation hours are from 5:30 a.m. to midnight, Sunday through Saturday.  If you are hired by King County as a Temporary Parks Employee, your schedule will be provided. There is no guarantee of preferred location.
