Meet a Few Part-Time Drivers Who Find Working for Metro Works for Them
At first Elmer Monillas was interested in driving part-time because it fit his schedule. “I wanted good benefits and flexibility, and I’ve always loved to drive, so applying for work as a part-time driver seemed like a good fit,” he said. “Now I like a lot of things besides the driving. I like meeting people from all walks of life, seeing my regular customers every day and dealing with the challenges driving gives me. Plus I like working outside and having an insider’s perspective on the best ways to get around our region!”
Gordon Taylor describes being a part-time driver this way. “It’s useful work. You take a bus out of the base, drive it, and bring it back. You pick up people and get them where they want to go. It’s a lot of responsibility and you’re paid well for it. If you can do this and do it safely, you’ve done honest work.” Driving part-time has allowed Gordon to pursue other interests. “And I’m not alone…There are lots of accomplished people driving for Metro Transit.”
Think driving a bus might be intimidating? So did Jennifer Cole. “Before I went through the training, I wasn’t sure if I could drive such a huge piece of machinery. But I soon found it easy and fun to drive something that big! Even after 11 years part-time with Metro, I still learn new things every day. Being a professional driver is something I’ve very proud of.” Jennifer likes having weekends free to pursue her craft business at Pike Place Market. “It’s really the best of all possible worlds. I earn a good hourly wage and benefits, and driving a bus is a nice change of pace from the other parts of my life.”
