King County to hold open house to present Preston traffic safety improvements

The King County Road Services Division will hold a community workshop from 7PM - 9PM, Wednesday, February 16 at the Preston Community Center to familiarize residents with a series of recommendations to improve pedestrian, traffic and bicycle safety in the Preston area.

This meeting is a follow-up to a community workshop held in November to identify a variety of pedestrian and safety needs in Preston. At that workshop, residents were asked to identify specific locations in their community where they think safety improvements might be needed. Information gathered from the November workshop has now been reviewed by the county. Examples of possible recommended improvements include:

  • Pedestrian safety improvements along High Point Way from Southeast 82nd Street to the Preston General Store.
  • Install an overhead crosswalk flasher and street lighting, augment parking restrictions (store side) and prohibit parking on the south side of SE 84th Street at High Point Way.
  • Intersection improvements (widening, lighting, pavement markings and signing) at Preston-Fall City Road and Southeast 87th Place.
  • Relocate school bus stop on Southeast 308th Street closer to the trailhead on 308th Avenue Southeast.
  • Continue a collaborative effort with King County Parks to foster trail connections and pedestrian safety improvements.
  • Evaluate current speed limits along Preston-Fall City Rd from I-90 to Fall City.
  • Prohibit the use of truck compression brakes along Preston-Fall City Road.
In addition to these recommendations, the Washington State Department of Transportation plans to install additional stop signs at the intersection of I-90 and Southeast 82nd Street.

During the workshop, residents will have an opportunity to review recommended short and long-term traffic and pedestrian improvements and share their comments. Projects ultimately identified by the community will then be eligible for funding, as it becomes available. The county currently has $100,000 available to make pedestrian and safety improvements in the Preston area. A similar Neighborhood Enhancement Program to identify safety and pedestrian needs is underway in the Fall City area.

Preston Community Center is located at 5625 310th Avenue Southeast, Preston. For more information about the workshop, contact Barbara de Michele at (206) 263-3792 or by e-mail at barbara.demichele@metrokc.gov
