King County launches stairway replacement project at Vashon Heights park-and-ride lot

The King County Road Services Division will begin a project to replace the deteriorating stairway linking the Vashon Heights Park-and-Ride Lot with the Vashon Ferry Terminal the week of March 6th.

The county will replace the existing stairway at the park-and-ride lot with a covered stairway. Crews will also repair an existing underground drainage system, install a retaining wall and reconstruct the paved shoulder along the west side of 103rd Avenue Southwest between the park-and-ride entrance (approximately Southwest 110th Street) and the base of the stairs. The improvements will enhance pedestrian access from the park-and-ride lot. The project, costing an estimated $500,000, is expected to take about two and one-half months to complete. The contractor for the project will begin assembling equipment and preparing the area for construction the week of February 28th.

During construction, passengers will be provided with a temporary pathway around the project. Up to 15 parking stalls in the lot may also be needed to accommodate construction equipment and materials. While construction is underway, King County is urging residents to use other parking lots that have space available. Those lots are located at Vashon Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit at 15420 Vashon Highway Southwest and Valley Center located at 20221 99th Avenue Southwest. The county expects to formalize other agreements to provide more parking in the near future.

Beginning at 7AM, March 6th, Southwest 103rd Street will be reduced to one-way traffic northbound between Cowan Road and Vashon Highway. The lane restriction may also be necessary to accommodate a sewer project expected to be underway later this spring. Motorists traveling southbound after exiting the ferry should use Vashon Highway Southwest as a detour.
