Release date: September 25, 2000

Bomb scare prompts Metro Transit re-routes across SR-520 bridge

The Elliott Bridge on 149th Avenue over the Cedar River will be closed Friday and Saturday, October 6th and 7th, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m, so the King County Road Services Division can conduct necessary tests in connection with repair work now being performed.

A recent inspection revealed deterioration to the bottom beams of the steel trusses that support the bridge. Repairs on the bridge are almost complete but tests are needed to determine what the new load limit on the bridge should be.

The bridge is currently posted for a maximum gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds, or 5 tons. In essence, only passenger cars and light trucks are being allowed to cross the bridge.

After the results of this week's tests are evaluated, a new load limit will be posted.
