King County to hold open house to discuss Des Moines Memorial Drive sidewalk and safety improvementsThe King County Road Services Division will hold an open house from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM, Wednesday, June 21st at Southern Heights Elementary School to familiarize residents with plans to improve pedestrian safety on Des Moines Memorial Drive between South 128th Street and South 96th Street. The county is exploring two design alternatives that would improve traffic and pedestrian safety along the roadway, as recommended by the Boulevard Park Community Advisory Group. In its current configuration, the roadway is four lanes and has limited walking areas. The first alternative being considered would re-stripe the roadway to three lanes, and include utility pole relocation and the construction of sidewalks and a five-foot wide bike lane in each direction with minimal right-of-way impacts. The second alternative would maintain four traffic lanes, and include utility pole relocation and the construction of sidewalks and a five-foot wide bike lane in each direction with right-of-way impacts on both sides of the roadway. Both alternatives propose a significant tree planting effort along the roadway to preserve the commemorative aspect of Des Moines Memorial Drive. The project is scheduled for construction next year. During the open house, residents will have an opportunity to share their comments with county staff. Those comments will be considered prior to the selection of a preferred alternative. Southern Heights Elementary School is located at 11248 14th Avenue South in Seattle. For more information about the open house, contact Mary Bass at (206) 263-5259. ### |
