Green River Gorge Bridge to close June 11

The Green River Gorge Bridge in rural southeast King County will be closed for five months starting Monday, June 11. The lengthy closure is needed because of the extensive work involved in cleaning and repainting the bridge, and because of its proximity to the Green River.

The closure will begin at 7 a.m. Monday, June 11, and is expected to last through Oct. 31. The bridge, which is located on Southeast Green River Gorge Road, is about three miles east of Black Diamond. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes during the closure.

The King County Road Services Division is painting the bridge as part of its countywide bridge painting project. This particular project also involves removal of the existing lead paint and additional environmental protections to keep debris out of the Green River.

Complete closure of the bridge is necessary because traffic will not be able to pass the sandblasting and painting equipment on the narrow, one-way bridge. The total budget for this project is $1,179,874. More information can be found at http://www.metrokc.gov/kcdot/roads/projects/gorge/ on the Web.
