July brings new bus fares and special holiday service

New fares go into effect for Metro Transit on Sunday, July 1, as part of an effort to increase both the quantity and quality of transit service.

The 25-cent increase affects riders who use transit during the morning and evening commute -- peak times -- plus those who use it throughout the day and night at off-peak times. Senior/disabled fixed-route fares are increased from 25 cents to 50 cents during peak hours only. To encourage new riders, youth fares drop from 75 cents to 50 cents.

The Metropolitan King County Council approved the fare increase in May to implement some long-range service improvements delayed by passage of Initiative 695. This fare change, coupled with a recent voter-approved sales-tax increase, is allowing Metro to put 124,000 hours of new service on the road in the next six months.

For more detailed information about the fare increase, or to find out how it affects pass holders and those who travel using multiple transit agencies, logon to Metro Online at http://transit.metrokc.gov/bus/farechange0701.html, or call Customer Service at (206) 553-3060.

The first week of July also marks service adjustments for the Independence Day holiday. On Wednesday, July 4, Metro and Sound Transit operate on a Sunday schedule with some extra service for major events such as the Fourth of JulIvar's and Woodinville fireworks displays. The Metro tunnel and Metro's Rider Information, Lost & Found and Customer Assistance offices will be closed, as will all other Metro, Sound Transit and King County offices. Sounder Commuter Rail will not operate on July 4.

The Elliott Bay Water Taxi will operate on a Saturday schedule. On Metro, All-Day passes will be available for $2.50, and Family Fares apply, where up to four children through age 17 can ride free with each adult who pays a full fare.

For complete information about all regular and special service on July 4, logon to http://transit.metrokc.gov, or call (206) 553-3000 voice or (206) 684-1739 for TTY/TDD.
