Metro hits home run with its special All-Star service, and there's more to come

During the recent All-Star Baseball Game festivities here in Seattle, one of the best averages was scored by Metro Transit.

For three days from July 8-10, Metro served more than 4,700 customers using Special Service traveling from Safeco Field and the Stadium Exhibition Center. And even more baseball fans used regular Metro routes to attend All-Star events.

The average ridership for just the special service was 75 passengers on a 64-seat bus - meaning Metro batted well over 1.000 for its All-Star Special Service.

Metro leads the nation in providing the most-used special service to sports events based on surveys with other agencies. Metro set a single weekend record last August when special shuttles carried more than 75,000 people to Seahawks football at Husky Stadium, the hydroplane races on Lake Washington and U.S. Navy ships docked in Elliott Bay - despite the emergency closure of one lane of the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge because of tugboat damage.

This summer, Metro has provided special service to Mariners games, horse racing at Emerald Downs, Fourth of July fireworks and the King County Fair in Enumclaw. More special service is coming up this weekend and next:

  • On Saturday and Sunday, Metro will run shuttles to the Bite of Seattle from the Northgate park-and-ride lot and near the Pike Place Market. Service operates every 30 minutes on both days from 9:59 a.m. until 10:59 p.m.
  • Next weekend, July 28-29, Metro offers shuttle service to the Bellevue Arts & Crafts Festival from the Houghton, south Bellevue and south Kirkland park-and-ride lots. Both the parking and shuttle service is free. The shuttles leave the lots every 15 minutes beginning at 9:45 a.m.
  • There will be special shuttle service to the WOMAD Festival at Marymoor Park in Redmond July 28-29. The service will run between the University of Washington campus and Marymoor, with parking in a lot just north of Husky Stadium.

Information on all special service is available online at http://transit.metrokc.gov.
