King County readies Tolt Hill Bridge for major repairs

The King County Road Services Division is preparing the Tolt Hill Bridge for emergency repairs this week following the discovery of severe deterioration during a comprehensive inspection. The inspection, conducted earlier this month, revealed significant corrosion of steel beams that support the bridge, located between State Route 203 (also known as Fall City-Carnation Road) and West Snoqualmie River Road.

Following closure of the bridge Aug. 3, additional analysis and ultrasonic testing showed the presence of significant corrosion at additional locations. Based on that follow-up analysis, bridge engineers have now completed a design that calls for additional steel beam reinforcement just below both railings of the bridge. The steel replacement work is expected to start early next week following the delivery of materials. If the project runs smoothly and no additional problems develop, the county hopes to complete the necessary work and reopen the bridge on Sunday, Sept. 9, in time for the Monday morning commute. If necessary, the county will work extended hours to make the repairs so the road can reopen as quickly as possible.

The bridge is located on Tolt Hill Road, which is a key corridor used by motorists traveling between Carnation and the communities of Sammamish and Redmond.

While repairs are being made, motorists should continue to use State Route 202 through Fall City, SR-203 and West Snoqualmie River Road as detour routes.
