County to accelerate intersection work west of Duvall

King County will begin work on an interim traffic signal at the intersection of West Snoqualmie Valley Road and Northeast 124th Street during the week of Nov. 12 to improve traffic flow in the lower Snoqualmie Valley.

"We hope to have this new signal working by mid-December," said Linda Dougherty, manager of the Road Services Division. "This is ahead of our original schedule, but moving forward on an interim signal will reduce delays drivers are currently experiencing at this busy intersection."

During the signal installation, motorists can expect intermittent lane closures at off-peak times. There will also be some paving on the shoulders of the road to improve turns for larger vehicles.

The intersection has seen an increase in truck traffic since load restrictions went into effect on King County’s Woodinville-Duvall Bridge and Snohomish County’s High Bridge Road. It is anticipated the intersection will be even busier next summer, when the Woodinville-Duvall Bridge is completely closed to traffic for three months during a major rehabilitation.

The signal work is part of two larger projects for West Snoqualmie Valley Road. The first would add turn lanes at the Northeast 124th intersection, and the second would realign and improve the intersection of West Snoqualmie Valley Road and Novelty Hill Road. Those projects are expected to be constructed over the next three years.

"We want to work with the community, the state Department of Transportation, and other agencies to lessen the impact of the current weight restrictions prior to the bridge closure," said Dougherty. "West Snoqualmie Road will be heavily used during the closure, so anything we can do now to improve it will have a real payoff next summer."
