Include a free ride in your waste-free holiday

Save money and save time by taking the bus to a wide variety of discounted events that promote waste-free holidays.

King County Metro Transit will be handing out information on cutting the waste from your holidays, and giving away free-ride tickets for both Metro Transit and the Water Taxi from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Westlake Park on Thursday, Dec. 13.

The holiday season is a special time of giving, but it's also one of the most wasteful times of year, with Americans generating an extra one million tons of trash per week. The average King County family will wrap and give 30 presents this year.

King County's annual Waste-Free Holidays program offers an alternative: give an experience as a gift. The goal is to encourage giving gifts that reduce waste and at the same time provide enjoyment. This year, participants are encouraged to ride the bus to more 90 local businesses participating in the Waste-Free Holidays campaign.

Through the end of December, mention Waste-Free Holidays and receive discounts of up to 50 percent on gift certificates and tickets for hundreds of events and memberships at King County arts, sports and entertainment organizations, and restaurants. All are listed on the King County Web site at www.metrokc.gov.
