South 120th Street to be improved by King County

The King County Road Services Division will begin constructing new sidewalks and drainage improvements on a stretch of South 120th Street between Des Moines Memorial Drive South and Military Road South starting the week of June 10.

During the construction period, crews will build sidewalks and bicycle lanes on both sides of the roadway to enhance safety. Additional improvements will include lighting, landscaping, a rockery wall, a closed storm drainage system, and storm water quality and detention facilities. The improvements are expected to be completed by mid-August. Metro Transit will also be adding bus shelters at several locations along the project route.

There are no road closures expected so detours are not necessary, but drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes around the construction area to avoid traffic slowdowns. Two travel lanes will be open to traffic during peak travel hours. However, there may be times during off-peak hours when only one lane will be opened to traffic. In this case, flaggers will be available to direct one direction of traffic at a time.

The total project budget is estimated at $1.5 million.
