Bridge upgrade requires summer-long closure starting June 24

After more than 50 years of service, the Woodinville-Duvall Bridge is
getting a major upgrade this summer to improve safety for motorists. But, the
project will require King County to completely close the bridge from Monday,
June 24 through late September.
During routine inspections last summer, engineers discovered many cracks on
the 12 spans of reinforced box girders that make up the superstructure of the
bridge. Water seeps through those cracks and corrodes the reinforcing steel,
accelerating structural deterioration and shortening the bridge's life. To
protect safety, the county posted a 40,000-pound load-limit restriction for the
bridge last July.
Starting Monday, a contractor will be installing steel rods in the
superstructure of the bridge, resurfacing and sealing the deck, and upgrading
the guardrails. It is a $2.5 million project.
During the closure this summer, all downtown Duvall businesses will remain
open during construction.

- Red: Heading south from Snohomish County:
From the High Bridge Road head east
on Tualco Road to get to State Route 203 and south to Duvall.
- Green: Heading east on Woodinville Duvall Road:
Go south on West Snoqualmie
Valley Road, east on NE 124th Street, and back north to Duvall on State Route
203.
- Blue: Heading northeast from Redmond and Sammamish:
Head east on Ames Lake
Road and Carnation Farm Road, or east on Tolt Hill Road, then head
north on SR 203.
To help motorists gauge the flow of local traffic, two traffic cameras have
been installed – at
Northeast
124th Street and West Snoqualmie Valley Road, and at
Northeast
124th Street and SR 203. These cameras can be viewed on the
My Commute Web site.
During the closure,
three Metro bus routes
--
Routes 232, 311 and 929 -- will be rerouted via SR 203, Northeast 124th Street
and West Snoqualmie Valley Road Northeast. Also, stops in Duvall on Main Street
north of Ring Street and stops on the Woodinville-Duvall Road between Main
Street and West Snoqualmie Valley Road Northeast will not be served during the
closure. In downtown Duvall, passengers should use the temporary bus stop on
Brown Avenue at Richardson Street.
Built in 1951, the Woodinville-Duvall Bridge is 1,182 feet long and carries
more than 17,000 vehicles daily. More than one in ten of those vehicles are
trucks.
The King County Roads Services Division plans more work in 2004, when
additional seismic retrofitting will be done on the bridge. The seismic
retrofit should be able to be completed without full closure of the bridge.
