The King County Road Services Division is holding a public hearing and open
house to gather input on a project to replace the Elliott Bridge over the Cedar
River southeast of Renton.
The hearing will be held Monday, Nov. 18 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at
the East Renton Community Church, 13232 156th Ave. SE, Renton. A
court reporter will be on hand to record citizen comments. Testimony can also
be submitted in writing, by email, or via the phone.
King County has identified a preferred alternative for replacing the narrow,
deteriorating Elliott Bridge located on 149th Avenue Southeast off of State
Route 169. The plan calls for the replacement bridge and new roadway to be
located 1,000 feet upstream of the existing bridge.
A draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) has been issued.
The county is in the process of accepting community comments on the draft SEIS
prior to final issuance. Total project costs are estimated at $15 million, and
construction is scheduled for 2003-2004.
The replacement bridge will provide wider travel lanes and a sidewalk for
safer access by vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians. The new structure will
also provide increased sight distances on the bridge and its approaches. The
existing bridge will remain open to traffic during construction. More than
14,000 drivers currently use the bridge each day.
