News from King County Transportation Release date: July 11, 2005 Long-term road closure near 60 Acres Soccer Park The York Bridge on Northeast 116th Street near the 60 Acres Soccer Park north of Redmond will be closed for up to 18 months starting Wednesday, July 13. Access to the park and other nearby recreation areas will remain open while the bridge over the Sammamish River is rebuilt. The bridge, which is jointly owned by King County and the city of Redmond, must be replaced for a number of reasons. The existing bridge was designed and built 50 years ago for much lower traffic volumes and loads. Today, the concrete is severely cracked and load restrictions are necessary. It is also anticipated that the bridge would sustain severe damage in the event of an earthquake. In addition, the bridge structure creates visibility problems between drivers and users of the Sammamish River Trail. The bridge also lacks sidewalks and bicycle lanes. When replaced, the new bridge will correct sight-distance visibility problems. Both trails along the Sammamish River will be realigned to pass underneath the bridge, with access to the trails provided at two places from the bridge. This project will also provide sidewalks and bicycle lanes on both sides. Construction is expected to last for 18 months, through November 2006. Motorists can detour via 154th Place Southeast, Northeast 124th Street, and Willows Road. During certain points in the project, the Sammamish River Trail will also have a temporary detour.
