UPDATE: Road project in Cherry Valley on schedule
A second, longer closure begins Thursday, July 6 and is scheduled to last through Sept. 1. This project takes more time because it involves installation of four new culverts. It is located from the 28700 block to the 29300 block of Cherry Valley Road. King County and Fire District 45 are sharing the costs of staffing the Big Rock Road Fire Station with career firefighters during the longer closure to maintain emergency response times in the local neighborhoods. All of the projects involve replacing aging undersized culverts underneath Northeast Cherry Valley Road that are showing signs of failure. Some of these clay culverts date back to the 1920s, and serious roadway problems could develop if they are not replaced. Replacing the old narrow culverts with larger concrete box culverts will also improve local drainage to reduce flooding and create better passage for fish and wildlife. Total closure of Cherry Valley Road is necessary due to the large size of the new culverts and the amount of heavy equipment moving around the two sites. Each project requires digging a trench that is up to 15 feet deep by 30 feet across. The county is not able to do a one-lane closure due to the large trenches and amount of heavy equipment at each site. Plus, there are safety issues related to mixing vehicle traffic with construction activities on a narrow roadway like Cherry Valley Road where the shoulders are tight or non-existent. Crews have been working extra hours each week to get the work completed as quickly as possible, and to meet deadlines set by the state for working near fish habitat. Because there are few cross streets along Cherry Valley Road, the posted detour is lengthy. During the closures motorists can detour via: Carnation-Duvall Road Northeast (State Route 203); Northeast Big Rock Road; and Kelly Road Northeast. For more information about the project contact Marnie McGrath at (206) 684-1154, or email her. For urgent concerns outside regular business hours, contact the Roads 24/7 Helpline at (206) 296-8100.
Road projects in Cherry Valley begin Thursday, June 15 June 12, 2006 - Residents in the Cherry Valley area east of Duvall will see several road maintenance projects get underway this summer that are aimed at preserving local roadways, reducing flooding, and making travel safer. All of the King County Road Services Division projects involve replacing aging undersized culverts underneath Northeast Cherry Valley Road that are showing signs of failure. Some of these clay culverts date back to the 1920s, and serious roadway problems could develop if they are not replaced. Replacing the old narrow culverts with larger concrete box culverts will also improve local drainage to reduce flooding and create better passage for fish and wildlife. Work is scheduled to begin Thursday, June 15 on a culvert replacement on Northeast Cherry Valley Road from the 27100 block to the 28400 block. It will be a round-the-clock road closure, and is expected to last through Thursday, June 29. The second closure is scheduled for Thursday, July 6 through Sept. 1 from the 28700 block to the 29300 block. This project lasts longer because it involves replacing four failing culverts. Because there are few cross streets along Cherry Valley Road, the posted detour is lengthy. During the two road closures motorists can detour via: Carnation-Duvall Road Northeast (State Route 203); Northeast Big Rock Road; and Kelly Road Northeast. Total closure of Cherry Valley Road is necessary due to the large size of the new culverts and the amount of heavy equipment moving around the two sites. Each project requires digging a trench that is up to 15 feet deep by 10 feet across. The county is not able to do a one-lane closure due to the large trenches and amount of heavy equipment at each site. Plus, there are safety issues related to mixing vehicle traffic with construction activities on a narrow roadway like Cherry Valley Road where the shoulders are tight or non-existent. Crews will be working extra hours each week to get the work completed as quickly as possible, and to meet deadlines set by the state for working near fish habitat. These culvert projects have been delayed for the past several years because Cherry Valley Road was used as a detour route while other nearby roads were closed for construction. Once all the culvert replacement projects are completed in September, Cherry Valley Road will be repaved from the Duvall city limits to Kelly Road Northeast. For more information about the project contact Marnie McGrath at (206) 684-1154, or email her. For urgent concerns outside regular business hours, contact the Roads 24/7 Helpline at (206) 296-8100.
