News from King County Department of Transportation
As the transportation community nationwide prepares to celebrate "Dump the Pump" day on Thursday, June 19, King County Metro Transit has more ways than ever to cut the miles you travel in your own car. Not only will you save money at the gas pump, but you'll also be helping to reduce traffic congestion and eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from our air. Not sure which travel option is best for you? Check out Metro's gateway to all your choices - everything from buses to bikes travel information is linked up in one spot. Maybe you need transportation beyond the county boundaries or outside of commute hours. The Transportation Resources Index is a great place to find out about transit agencies in the regional, traveling within your neighborhood, or how to get assistance if you are a senior, disabled, or low-income. Low-income households can also get assistance in getting transportation to jobs through the Jobs Access Transportation Program. If you are a first-time bus rider, Metro offers some handy tips for taking your inaugural ride. You can also learn about using the extensive park-and-ride system, and how to use the online Trip Planner to make the best bus connections. The basic bus-riding information is also available for non-English speaking passengers. In addition to English, Metro has published a brochure [pdf 15 mb] with the information available in: Cambodian/Khmer; Chinese; Korean; Laotian; Russian; Somali; Spanish; Tigrinya; Ukrainian; and Vietnamese. Sometimes the bus or train just doesn't work for you, and that's why thousands of people turn to vanpools or vanshares for commuting. The RideshareOnline website offers a wealth of information on this option. If you're still driving alone, why not try something different for this year's Dump the Pump day. Who knows, you might just get hooked on having more money in your wallet and less stress in your life. Find out what other transit agencies in our region [pdf 105 kb] are doing this week to help you beat the high cost of gas.
