A Message From The Department Director

Photo: KCDOT Director Harold TaniguchiDear Resident:

The state of our transportation system is perhaps the most passionately debated public issue facing King County today. It’s easy to understand why. Traffic congestion has been growing along with the county’s population for many years, and has had a significant impact on our region’s mobility and economic vitality. Our transportation challenges have been particularly difficult to overcome during this era of diminishing transportation funding stemming from voter-approved initiatives and a soft economy. Nevertheless, King County’s Department of Transportation has remained focused on carrying out a tradition of performance that has helped county residents get where they need to go.

The Department of Transportation delivers transit and road services, maintains the county’s fleet of vehicles and equipment, and operates a general aviation airport. In addition to operating these four major divisions, the department also provides integrated regional transportation planning, encourages transit-friendly development, provides selected road services to cities on a contract basis, and is committed to maintaining collaborative relationships with residents, stakeholders and other governments. No other transportation agency in the nation is organized in this unique way. It is a very powerful combination that has allowed the department to play a prominent role in shaping regional transportation solutions.

That’s why we operate one of the largest hybrid bus and vehicle fleets in the nation. It’s why we take extra care to improve fish habitat as part of our road-building and maintenance programs. It’s a big job considering that King County is the 13th most populous county in the nation, with more than 1.7 million people living within a 2,100-square-mile area.

Our organization maintains its leadership because of the quality and inventiveness of our programs, services, and employees. In many ways, our services serve as “lifelines” to our customers – be it on a daily basis or when responding around-the-clock to ensure public safety during natural disasters.

We also partner with others to manage growth and provide the best mobility solutions in ways that are efficient and cost effective. In the past few years, we have instituted a series of reforms, reorganized the department, and found ways to be more innovative and offer the most service for the least amount of money. What has been proven to work has been implemented. To that end, the department has experienced a very productive five years – to the credit of a highly skilled and professional workforce that possessed the creativity to overcome obstacles and make things happen.

And, the changes in business strategy and management that have swept through the department in recent years will continue well into the future, as we work together to seek the best solution to each and every challenge we face.

Our future success will be determined by our ability to continue to perform at levels we have never before experienced. Together with our partners, I’m confident we will meet the challenge of creating a 21st Century transportation system that builds on our tradition of performance.

Sincerely,

Harold S. Taniguchi
