Metro opens new season of special service Metro bus outside SAFECO Field

Artwork for the cover of the 2001 "Take Metro to the Ball Game" brochure [enlarged view: 19KB]

With the return of baseball to SAFECO Field, Metro opens a new season of special service for special events, starting with express bus service between Seattle Mariners home games and Metro park-and-ride lots in north, south and east King County.

The Mariners special service operates in both directions for all weekend and holiday games, and post-game only for weekday evening games that start after 5 p.m. There is no extra service for six weekday afternoon games that start before 5 p.m.; on those days fans should use regular bus service or share rides.

Fare on the special limited-stop service is $2.50 per person, cash only, each way. Passes and transfers are not accepted. On Sundays only, seniors ride for $1 cash each way. At all times, children aged 5 and younger ride free. Go to Metro Online for full details on Mariners special service and a map of post-game boarding locations. You can also call (206) 553-3000 (voice) or (206) 684-1739 (TTY).

Metro also provides plenty of regularly scheduled bus service to or near SAFECO Field. Any bus that travels along First or Fourth Avenues South or the Metro Busway stops within easy walking distance of the ballpark.

Sound Transit will also operate one Sounder train for Sunday games with 1:35 p.m. start times. The Sounder train will serve the Tacoma Dome, Puyallup, Sumner, Auburn, Kent and Tukwila stations. For full details see Sounder special service.

Metro leads the nation in providing the most-used special service to sports events, based on surveys with other agencies. Metro set a single weekend record last August when special shuttles carried more than 75,000 people to Seahawks football at Husky Stadium, the hydroplane races on Lake Washington, and U.S. Navy ships docked in Elliott Bay--despite the emergency closure of one lane of the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge because of tugboat damage.

And Metro has more special service coming up this spring:

  • Emerald Downs racetrack: Same weekend service as last year starting April 21
  • Northwest Folklife Festival: Shuttles between Seattle Center and downtown, and between Seattle Center and Northgate, over the Memorial Day weekend
