Narrator Says:
King County Executive Ron Sims and Port of Seattle Chief Executive Mic Dinsmore today announced a proposal called “Connections for our Future” that will support major economic and quality of life benefits to the area. The cornerstones are two valuable pieces of real estate.

Ron Sims/King County Executive says:
Connections for our Future has at its center the acquisition by the Port of Seattle of the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Eastside Rail Corridor. The Port will then Transfer the eastside Corridor and funds for the development of the “granddaddy of all regional trails” to King County in exchange for Boeing field, the King county International Airport, being transferred to the Port of Seattle. But it is far more than that.

Narrator says:
Other elements of the proposal include renovations to the Stampede Pass rail tunnel, the sale of Fisher Flour Mill property on Harbor Island to the Port of Seattle and finding a site for an intermodal rail yard that meets the county’s waste export needs.

Executive Sims says this unique proposal, if successful would position the county to remain economically competitive on a global scale, and at the same time establish a 47 mile long trail extending from Renton to Snohomish.

Ron Sims says:
Connections acquires the east side rail corridor and will unite the nations best urban regional trail system with a backbone that is one of the nations longest rail preservation projects. It prevents a priceless 150 year old corridor from being lost forever.

Connections will also unite the strategic management of two airports under one government to make this region more competitive internationally. Connections will enhance the economic foundation of our region by creating the links by which goods will flow seamlessly from our ports to our roads and railways to our markets overseas and across the country.

Narrator says:
Connections for our Future is still in the discussion stage and there will be much discussion by the King County Council and the Port of Seattle over the next several months before the details can be firmed up and approved.

Mic Dinsmore/Port of Seattle Says:
If we are fortunate and this all goes together as both Ron and I are hopeful and excited about, this region, this state can very definitely compete in the 21st century, both with commerce, with air activity and yes that wonderful quality of life that we all find so rewarding by living here.
