Roads Division Resident Engineer Bob Lee says:

I’ve been working in this business for almost 30 years, I’ve seen some bad situations, this is certainly one of the, ranks right up there, with some of the worst.

Narrator:

And it’s easy to see what Bob Lee, a resident engineer with the DOT is talking about.  The extreme flooding on the Raging River has left parts of its banks looking like this.

Half the road is gone on Upper Preston Road Southeast at the Preston Frontage Bridge.  And the bridge is partially undermined.  Crews have been working around the clock to make repairs.  Around midnight on Thursday morning, workers stabilized the bridge, which had been in jeopardy of collapse since the flooding.

At the river bank near the bridge, it’s been a mammoth effort to drop large rocks to stop erosion.  Crews are now estimating it’ll take 10 days to two weeks to fix this spot, but up the road where the damaged portion of the bank is 250 feet long, it will be more like several weeks.

That will be of major concern to the residents who occupy about 200 homes in the area.  In the meantime, the Roads Division is exploring alternative travel routes for those affected, including the creation of a gravel road that would link to SR 18.  All in all, crews are doing all they can in the wake of one of the worst floods to hit King County in years.

Roads Division Resident Engineer Bob Lee says:

It’s hard to prepare for it, but thankfully everyone’s pulled together here, the contractor and the county, and we’re doing the best we can out here.
