Contract city services — Traffic Engineering and Maintenance

About the Traffic Engineering and Maintenance Section

The King County Traffic Engineering and Maintenance Section offers specialized engineering services and basic maintenance of traffic devices, such as signals and stop signs, to more than 30 cities and public agencies. Eleven cities contract with the county for basic maintenance tasks such as signal preventive maintenance.

King County’s traffic engineers provide traffic engineering expertise in traffic operations, traffic systems, neighborhood and pedestrian safety, and traffic impact review. Customer cities most frequently request services related to traffic operations and traffic systems.

Traffic Maintenance crews install and maintain traffic control devices, handle scheduled maintenance activities, and respond to emergencies and other requests for service. Basic traffic maintenance includes installing and maintaining signs and pavement markings, and preventive maintenance and repair for signal systems and controllers.
