Roads Maintenance — Division Maintenance Unit

The Division Maintenance Unit is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and cleaning of roadway features throughout unincorporated King County and its contract cities. The unit’s goal is to perform these tasks in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner while protecting the public’s investment and promoting safe travel. The Division Maintenance Unit addresses the roads maintenance needs of the citizens of King County as well as providing emergency response during inclement weather and to natural and manmade disasters, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The unit is divided into four divisions that provide maintenance services to unincorporated areas of King County, including Vashon Island and Skykomish, as well as cities that contract for roads maintenance services through the county. Each of these divisions is responsible for providing services to its own distinct service area. In an effort to be prepared and responsive during emergencies, the unit has developed emergency preparedness plans that allow it to respond to windstorms, snowstorms, flooding, earthquakes, drought, and other potential emergencies in a timely and efficient manner. Some of the unit’s responsibility areas include:

  • Primary responder to citizen requests for service or work on the road right-of-way
  • Road surfaces (pothole patching and surface repair)
  • Shoulders (mowing and grading)
  • Drainage systems, including catch basins and ditches (cleaning and repair)
  • Slopes within the public right-of-way (mowing and stabilization)
  • Emergency response

During inclement weather, the divisions stand ready to respond 24/7.
