Roads Maintenance — Utility Inspection Unit

The King County Utility Inspection Unit reviews permit applications and inspects work done by utilities that are franchised or have agreements to operate within existing King County rights-of- way. The Utility Inspector’s main priorities are to get the necessary utilities installed in a safe, efficient manner and with minimal impact to the traveling public, the environment and county road system. Private citizens cannot obtain Right-of-Way Construction Permits for utility work. If a new utility service is needed, please contact the appropriate utility and they will obtain the permit. Utility permits are obtained through King County Real Estate Services (206-296-7456).

Please contact Utility Inspection at 206-296-8122 if you have questions regarding utility work on county rights-of-way. If your question concerns work on private property, please contact the Department of Development and Environmental Services at 206-296-6640.

Call Before You Dig

Before digging on County Rights-of-Way, State Law requires all persons doing excavation to call “One Call” for utility locates (1-800-424-5555). The area to be “located” should be marked with white paint. The located utilities as stated by the American Public Works Association are as follows:

RED = Electric power lines, cables or conduits, and lighting cables
YELLOW = Gas, oil, steam, petroleum or other hazardous liquid or gaseous materials
ORANGE = Communications, cable TV, alarm or signal lines, cables, or conduits
BLUE = Water, irrigation, and slurry lines
GREEN = Sewers, storm sewer facilities, or other drain lines
WHITE = Proposed excavation
PINK = Temporary survey markings
PURPLE = Reclaimed water, irrigation and slurry lines
