King County Subarea Transportation Boards

South County Area
Transportation Board

Introduction

As a regional government, a primary goal of King County is to improve coordination of transportation services and facilities for the benefit of all of its citizens. One method of achieving greater coordination is through subarea transportation boards, comprised of elected officials from local jurisdictions and King County, transportation agency representatives, and the private sector. Three of these boards have been established in King County: the Eastside Transportation Partnership (ETP), the South County Area Transportation Board (SCATBd), and the Seashore Transportation Forum (SeaShore).

The mission of the subarea transportation boards is to provide forums for sharing information and building consensus to solve common transportation problems. King County provides the staffing necessary to coordinate decision-making and implementation of multi-modal transportation improvements.

The ETP and SCATBd groups have both been in existence since the late 1980's and have established themselves as useful forums for discussion and input to decision makers about transportation issues. SeaShore was established in the early 1990's. All three boards have been identified as the recognized forums for providing direction on specific transportation decisions. These include:

In addition to continuing to rely on the subarea transportation boards to fulfill these responsibilities, King County anticipates increasing reliance on them for public participation, developing a stronger voice at the state level, and facilitating completion of needed regional transportation improvements.

*With the exception of Vashon Island, the established subarea groups approximate the boundaries of the subareas established by Metro policy.
