Metro Transit planning documents

Updating the plans in 2008

Over the next year, the King County Metro and the Regional Transit Committee (RTC) of the King County council will discuss potential changes to the Comprehensive and Strategic Plans for Public Transportation. Between January and July of 2008, the RTC will discuss potential changes to goals, objectives, policies, and strategies contained in the plans. In September, King County Executive Ron Sims will transmit a proposed update to both plans for public comment and council adoption by the close of 2008. The following work products are planned, and links will be provided as each document becomes available.

Scope of work for the 2008 update

The RTC proposed a motion, passed by the King County Council, which identified the scope for the 2008 update to Metro’s planning documents, shown in the attachment below:

Jan. 16 RTC meeting

At the January RTC meeting, Metro staff proposed an RTC work plan for the comprehensive and strategic plan update, discussed the planning context, and introduced two papers for discussion at the February meeting.

Feb. 20 RTC meeting

At the February RTC meeting, the committee discussed potential changes to the goals and objectives included in the Comprehensive Plan for Public Transportation, and Metro’s proposal to combine the comprehensive and strategic plans into a single publication. A paper on emerging issues was introduced, for discussion at the March meeting.

March 19 RTC meeting

At the March RTC meeting, the committee discussed issues described in the emerging issues briefing paper, including transportation system pricing, transit mitigation of freeway construction, climate change, and healthy communities. All of these issues suggest an expanded role for transit, and the paper also addresses challenges to increasing transit service beyond what is included in Metro’s current financial plan.

April 16 RTC meeting

At the April meeting, RTC members discussed issues raised in the service quality paper.

May 28 RTC meeting

At the May meeting, RTC members discussed issues raised in the marketing paper.

June 18 RTC meeting

In June, the RTC discussed issues raised in the briefing paper on service and facility guidelines.

July 16 RTC meeting

In July, the RTC will discuss capital program issues. There will also be a recap provided by committee staff of issues raised over the course of the year. RTC feedback will help shape the final document that the King County Executive will submit in September for public review and adoption by the King County Council.
