Additional improvements
In addition to the four key improvement areas described elsewhere on this site, Transit Now also includes funding for the following improvements:
- For users with disabilities who are not served by the Access paratransit program, provide service through the Community Access Transportation Program;
- For non-disabled users outside Metro’s fixed-route coverage area, make enhancements that double participation in the VanPool, VanShare, and ridematch programs to increase carpooling; and
- Within Metro’s fixed-route coverage areas, improve non-motorized access to transit.
What’s happening now
Access Transportation—Transit Now funding has allowed Metro to expand Access paratransit service into four areas in rural King County that were not previously served (see map [989KB, PDF]). Beginning with the transit service change in September 2007, these areas now have Access service from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays. In addition, planning is underway for bus stop enhancements that will allow more seniors and riders with disabilities to use regular bus service.
Vanpool and vanshare services—Outreach is being conducted to promote Metro’s vanpool and vanshare services and RideshareOnline to smaller employers in King County.
Bike racks—Metro’s fleet of buses is currently equipped with racks that accommodate two bikes. It is Metro’s goal to retrofit its entire bus fleet with three-position bike racks in 2008-09, following the resolution of some design problems that emerged last year with the three-position bike racks. Bike racks are also available for all vanpool and vanshare vehicles on request.
