New Year’s holiday schedule for transit service

Metro Transit bus routes will operate on a Sunday schedule both Sunday and Monday – Jan. 1 and 2 - for the New Year’s holiday.

However, Jan. 2 some Metro routes have added trips as noted by the letter "H" on the weekday schedule. Bus Route 99, the Waterfront Streetcar Line, will not operate on Jan. 1.

All Metro customer service offices, including Rider Information, will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2. For complete Metro holiday information, visit  Metro Online.

Road repairs tied to tides

Photo: Dockton Rd.Two weeks ago, the King County Road Services Maintenance staff tackled a repair job with an unusual influence – the tides.

On Monday, Dec. 19, maintenance crews were patrolling roads after the storm that blew through earlier in the weekend. The high winds, in conjunction with high tides, damaged an old wooden bulkhead on the beachfront causing a washout under two sections Dockton Road Southwest. Staff immediately closed that portion of the roadway to traffic, and notified county environmental and design staff to evaluate the problem and to proceed with the required shoreline permitting and repairs.

But even though the crews were ready to have the work done quickly, they had to wait for low tide. That meant the maintenance staff couldn’t begin work until 1 a.m. It took about four hours to complete the main part of the repairs, and then a small bit of repaving had to wait for daylight.

The Vashon crews are continuing to monitor this stretch of roadway closely over the next few weeks, or until the threat from the continued high tides subside.

Reminder: Do not drive around road barricades

Photo: Road closed barricadeRecent wet weather has caused low-land flooding across King County recently. In some cases the King County Road Services Division had to close roads because of water over the roadway.

Motorists are warned to not drive through standing water or around barricades and road closure signs. The No. 1 cause of flood-related deaths is motorists who drive into flooded roadways. Motorists should also never attempt to drive through an area closed by mud or rock slides.
