  Reminder: South Park Bridge hearing this Thursday

Photo: South Park BridgeKing County will host a public meeting this week on the alternatives for rehabilitating or replacing the South Park Bridge in South Seattle.

The meeting will be held Thursday, Nov. 3 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Concord Elementary School, 723 S. Concord St., Seattle.

‘Swaploaders’ help Roads Division respond quickly

Photo: Swaploader with dump boxNew QuickSwap trucks and trailers have arrived at the King County Road Services Division’s maintenance headquarters in Renton, where several training sessions were held for staff. The six new “swaploaders,” as these vehicles are known, have a chassis with an open bed that allows multiple types of equipment to be mounted on the truck.

The equipment attachments that recently arrived include a water tank, dump box, anti-icer, and sander. The existing asphalt hot patchers have been retrofitted to work on the new Swaploaders. The quick-change nature of the equipment allows the attachments to be loaded by a single individual in record time. Additionally, many of the attachments can be loaded in a much safer way than previous methods, reducing the chance for injuries.

  •   reduce the amount stand-alone
       pieces of equipment needed;
  •   increase efficiency in
      maintaining roads;
  •   and enhance workplace safety.

It is just one of many ways Roads Maintenance is meeting King County’s overall goal to increase efficiency and reduce costs.

‘Be prepared’ is Roads’ motto, too

New generators are being installed at the Roads Division maintenance yards in Black Diamond, Maple Valley, Fall City, and Redmond. The new generators include an automatic start feature. During a power outage, they automatically come on - keeping the site operational until staff arrives.

The new generators will allow the entire facility, including gas pumps for the maintenance equipment, to be operational throughout any outage. This lets crews respond more quickly to emergencies and weather-related clean-up on roadways in unincorporated King County.

Husky homecoming this weekend

Photo: Husky logoIt’s homecoming for the University of Washington Huskies this weekend, and the Dawgs could use a little love from the hometown fans as they take on Oregon State and look for their first Pac-10 win this season.

Fans going to the game at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday can ride on Metro Transit to beat the crowds and parking hassles. Metro offers both regular service and special shuttles from eight outlying park-and-rides to and from Husky Stadium. Your ride is free on any Metro bus when you show your Husky game ticket or ticket stub to the bus driver.

Details for all the football service can be found on Metro Online.
