Roads employees compete at national roadeo

Photo: Snow Rodeo contestantsFour King County Road Services Division employees participated last week at the 2005 National Snow Roadeo, held as part of the American Public Works Association Snow and Ice Conference in Estes Park, Colo.

The highly competitive National Snow Roadeo included obstacle course driving, written tests, and vehicle inspections. The best truck drivers and equipment operators from around the country faced off in three vigorous days of competition. Here are the results for the King County contestants, all from the Maintenance Section:

Flood season arrives early

Residents in East King County got an early taste of winter late last week, when the Snoqualmie River flooded and closed a handful of roads in the upper and lower Snoqualmie Valley.

River levels receded throughout the day Friday, and the Flood Warning Center closed by the afternoon.
County officials are urging residents in flood-prone areas to not rely on the calendar. They should prepare now for stormy weather and high water. In the past 15 years, King County has been hit by six federally declared flood disasters.

If you live in areas prone to floods or slides, have sand bags on hand. Also, have an evacuation plan with routes and emergency phone numbers written down for each member of the family. It should include a pre-determined meeting point in case family members get separated.

On the weekend of Oct. 21 and 22, the King County Office of Emergency Management will hold an event called "Are You Ready?" at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall. It will offer plenty of tips on preparing for all kinds of emergencies.

In the meantime, stay in touch by subscribing to the redesigned Regional Public Information Network (RPIN). The RPIN Web site has alerts on disasters, road and bridge closures, and other weather-related emergency notices.
