Moving ahead on a new home for waterfront streetcar

Photo: Waterfront streetcarsKing County Executive Ron Sims has recently sent a plan for relocating the home of the George Benson Waterfront Streetcar Line to the Metropolitan King County Council for approval. It also includes a proposal for continuing transit service along the waterfront to the International District while the streetcars are out of service during construction of the Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Garden.

The streetcar maintenance facility is currently located at the foot of Broad Street near the south end of Myrtle Edwards Park. It must be relocated to make way for the Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park, which is currently under construction. In June, county and city officials teamed up with a private developer on a plan that would rebuild the barn in Pioneer Square in a building that also includes housing and retail.

Construction of the sculpture garden will soon require the streetcar maintenance building to be demolished. Until it is rebuilt, the route will be served by buses. Metro Transit will provide free bus service beginning Nov. 19 through the construction of the sculpture park. The buses will feature specially designed graphics and will still link the International District/Chinatown, Pioneer Square and the Waterfront communities. The fare will be free, because the route will be within Metro's Downtown Seattle Ride Free Area.

Hawks are back in town

The Seahawks and Metro Transit are providing non-stop shuttle service for home games from five area park-and-ride lots for $3 each way. Cut through all the traffic and parking hassles and try riding the bus to the game.

South Park Bridge alternatives now available for review

Photo: South Park BridgeThe environmental review of alternatives for rehabilitating or replacing the South Park Bridge in South Seattle is now available for review, and will be the subject of a public meeting early next month.

The draft EIS is online in a .pdf format. A Spanish-language website is also available. Print copies are also located at the Downtown Seattle Public Library, the Delridge Library, High Point Library, White Center Library, and the offices of the Environmental Coalition of South Seattle at 8201 10th Ave. S.

The county will hold a public hearing on the draft EIS on: Thursday, Nov. 3; from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Concord Elementary School gymnasium, 723 S. Concord St., Seattle.

This meeting will be a drop-in, open house format, and comments and testimony will be taken throughout the full three hours of this meeting. A Spanish-language interpreter also will be available to assist those who wish ask questions or provide testimony in Spanish.

The King County Road Services Division has been working on plans to preserve the crossing over the Duwamish River for several years. The condition of the 75-year-old span between Seattle and Tukwila on 14th/16th Avenue has severely deteriorated, and was made worse during the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake.

A preferred alternative will be chosen by the end of the year.
