  Sounding Boards need new members

King County Metro Transit is looking for people to share and review ideas on how to improve future transit service for the Eastside and South King County.

Metro is currently forming two citizen sounding boards comprised of transit riders and community members. The members will help Metro planners review public comments received during the public outreach process, provide feedback from a community perspective, and assist in developing recommendations that could be implemented in the future when resources become available.

The sounding boards will begin meeting in mid-October, and hold eight meetings over the following five months. Sounding board members are also expected to attend some public meetings held in local communities. The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 30.

For more information or to receive an application, call the King County Department of Transportation’s Community Relations message line at 206 684-1955 (voice) or 206-684-1682 (TTY).

Roads roadeo stresses safety

Photo: Roads roadeoIt was all about safety and skill last Saturday, as the King County Road Services Division held a “roadeo” competition for its equipment operators and truck drivers.

The 2005 Roadeo winners are: Corey Green, 1st, and Tom Birklid, 2nd, in tandem and single-axle truck driving. The top-finishing equipment operators were: Clint Willaford, 1st; Bob McCallen, 2nd; and Bob Mayovsky, 3rd. They now advance to the American Public Works Association (APWA) National Snow Roadeo next week in Colorado.

Equipment operators competed in three road tests, plus a safety exam. Driving front loaders, the contestants maneuvered through a serpentine course without knocking down barricades, moved objects into small spaces, and ran through an obstacle course while safely balancing a load.

The truck drivers had to run through two courses using two different size trucks, one with a snowplow attached. They also had to pass a vehicle-safety check.

“The roadeo is a valuable learning experience for our employees,” said Leo Griffin, Assistant Operations Manager for Road Maintenance. “By participating in roadeo competitions, employees can network with other operators to share tips and experiences, and identify areas where they can improve their knowledge and skills long before a safety issue ever arises.”
