Tolt Bridge project waiting to clear last hurdle

Photo: Drawing of new Tolt BridgeKing County Executive Ron Sims has asked the Metropolitan King County Council to clear the last legislative hurdle in the way of replacing the deteriorating Tolt Bridge near Carnation.

Last week, Sims transmitted an ordinance to the council that would establish a new right-of-way on Northeast Tolt Hill Road. Approval of the ordinance will allow the King County Road Services Division to obtain the necessary right-of-way to begin constructing the new bridge next year.

The current Tolt Bridge was constructed in 1922, and suffers from general deterioration. The bridge has become increasingly costly to maintain, and has some safety deficiencies due to an awkward road alignment. The ordinance establishing alternative right-of-way along Northeast Tolt Hill Road will significantly improve safety and sight distance.

Construction of a new Tolt Bridge, including the realignment of approaches and demolition of the old bridge, will cost an estimated $23 million. The new bridge is expected to open in fall of 2007.

Get some help coping with commuting

Photo: Plan your commute station at IDSPrice of gas and traffic congestion got you tied up in knots? Why not get a commute makeover?

King County Metro Transit and its partners in the project to retrofit the downtown transit tunnel are offering individualized planning sessions to help commuters find their best travel options – whether by bus, train, carpool, vanpool, or bike. Along with your customized information, you get incentives and the tools you need to get started on a new commute.

For the next five weeks, you can get personal assistance at one of several “Plan Your Commute” stations located throughout downtown Seattle. The sessions are drop-in, and offer one-on-one advice from an expert trip planner. They are held Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

For more information on these sessions – including locations – visit either the tunnel project website or Metro Online, and go to the “Tools To Keep You Moving” section.

The hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
