Metro looking for input on new Redmond park-and-ride garage

King County Metro Transit is looking for public input on its plans to build a three-story parking garage near the current Redmond Park-and-Ride lot at 8178 161st Ave. NE.

An open house will be held Wednesday, Jan. 3 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. so that the public can get more information about the project and make comments. The open house will be held at the Redmond Regional Library, 15990 NE 85th St.

Preliminary plans call for a 386-stall garage to be built on a 1.4-acre portion of the current park-and-ride lot. Transit service would be provided at a new transit center on the opposite side of Northeast 83rd Street. A new crosswalk would provide safe pedestrian crossing between the two, and sidewalks would be improved along the street fronting the garage.

Holiday schedule for transit service

Metro Transit bus routes will operate on a Sunday schedule on Monday, Jan. 1 for the New Year’s holiday. Route 99, the waterfront streetcar bus, will not operate on that day.

All Metro customer service offices, including Rider Information, will be closed on Jan. 1. For complete Metro holiday information, visit Metro Online.

Preston road reopens three weeks early

A flood-damaged road in East King County was re-opened three weeks early thanks to an accelerated work schedule by the King County Road Services Division and its contractor.

A section of Upper Preston Road Southeast was closed during the week of Nov. 6 following heavy rainfall that caused a portion of the hillside supporting the road to fall into the Raging River – taking more than 300 feet of the southbound lane with it. Since the road is the only access into the Upper Preston community, residents were cut off and had to walk in and out of their neighborhood for several days.

Roads Services Division staff and the on-site contractor, Wilder Construction, built a temporary access road using the south shoulder of Interstate 90 within four days, but travel has been restricted while permanent repairs were made. The county originally thought the new roadway would not be completed until mid-January, but was able to accelerate the work. The total cost of repairs in the Upper Preston area is estimated at approximately $4 million.

Dockton Road now partially open

The King County Road Services Division has partially reopened Dockton Road Southwest on Vashon Island, and anticipates the road will be fully open by Jan. 1.

The road was closed between Portage Way Southwest and Chautauqua Beach Road on Dec. 11, after county engineers discovered the seawall supporting the road had suffered significant damage during recent storms and could no longer safely support the roadway.

Crews have now reached an important milestone, and the road is safe for travel during non-work hours. This partial opening will allow the crews to work faster and more safely. So, the road will still need to be closed when the crews are at work, which will be during the afternoon and evening to take advantage of low tides. Work along the seawall and the road should be wrapped up by the end of the month.

Roads wants feedback on Southwest 98th Street

King County is asking for input on how to make Southwest 98th Street more inviting for pedestrians and bicycles between the White Center business district and the new Greenbridge housing area.

The King County Road Services Division will host a drop-in open house on Tuesday, Jan. 9 from 7-9 p.m. at White Center Heights Elementary School, 10015 Sixth Ave. SW, Seattle. People can stop by to check out ideas for corridor improvements and share their own ideas.

The county has received state funding to design improvements along Southwest 98th Street that could include sidewalks and other enhancements to improve pedestrian safety, and possibly a new bike/pedestrian trail through the wetlands on the west side of Greenbridge.

For more information about the meeting, contact Marnie McGrath with the King County Department of Transportation by phone at (206) 684-1154 or by email at: marnie.mcgrath@metrokc.gov.
