Alaskan Way Viaduct
Alaskan Way Viaduct
Partnership Process
The State of Washington, King County, and the City of Seattle are working together to find a solution for the central waterfront section of the viaduct by the end of 2008. Governor Christine Gregoire, King County Executive Ron Sims, and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels have directed their transportation departments to begin evaluating options with the public.
Leaders of the three transportation departments have begun working with a Stakeholder Advisory Committee. This committee is made up of about 30 people representing business, neighborhood, freight, commuter, environmental and other constituencies. The group will meet monthly until the end of 2008.
The three agencies also are seeking input from the general public. People may comment at quarterly public meetings, or submit comments any time by e-mail; through the viaduct program Web site; by mail to Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Program, 999 Third Ave., Suite 2424, Seattle, WA 98104; or through the hotline, 1-888-AWV-LINE. The comments will be given to the stakeholder committee each month for their review.
The state, county, and city agreed that the partnership process would be guided by six principles:
- Improve public safety
- Provide efficient movement of people and goods
- Maintain or improve the economies of downtown Seattle, the port, the region, and the state
- Enhance Seattle’s waterfront as a place for people
- Create solutions that are fiscally responsible
- Foster environmentally sound approaches.

Moving Forward Projects
In addition to working with the Stakeholder Advisory Committee on a solution for the central waterfront, the county is working with the state and the city on the "Moving Forward" projects. These will repair or replace about half of the viaduct in the north and south ends of the corridor. For more information, please visit the WSDOT Web pages listed below that describe the Moving Forward projects.
