King County King County announced the closure of the Lake Wilderness Community Service Center in conjunction with the transfer of the Lake Wilderness Park to the City of Maple Valley. Its final week of operation will be December 2-4, 2002, Monday through Wednesday, Noon to 7:00 p.m. King County has discussed transferring facilities with cities since May 2002, after the County determined that its park budget had to be dramatically reduced to help close a project $52 million shortfall in its 2003 Current Expense budget. Such agreements are a major component of the Parks Transition Plan which, based on the recommendations of a citizen’s task force, calls for a redefined Parks Division role focusing on regional services and resource and ecological lands. King County Executive Ron Sims has asked staff to look into other potential sites to locate a Community Service Center in South County. Said Executive Sims, "We know the neighborhood Community Service Centers offer accessible and convenient services that are popular with the local residents, and we’re committed to continuing this valuable service." All other Community Service Centers will remain open. The County operates five other Community Service Centers that act as "mini County Halls" offering a mix of services including marriage licensing, property tax payments, residential building plan review and basic permitting, passports and concealed pistol license renewals in addition to providing a host of general information about County services. Most are co-located with other County facilities such as the Health Department and Sheriff’s Office precincts. The Lake Wilderness Community Service Center was the first of such centers and opened in July 1995. Its success spawned five others, all open from noon to 7 p.m. to provide County residents an alternative to the long drive to downtown Seattle for services. The other centers, which will remain open, are located in Bothell/Northshore, Vashon Island, Fall City, Woodinville, and Sammamish. In addition, the licensing office at the King County Regional Justice Center in Kent offers most of the same services available at the Community Service Centers.
