Regional Water Quality Committee to
take Public Comment on Brightwater Sites
The
Metropolitan King County Council’s Regional Water Quality Committee will
take public comment on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for
the Brightwater Regional Wastewater Treatment System at its regular meeting
Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 10th
Floor, King County Courthouse.
King County is proposing to build a new
wastewater system, called Brightwater, by the year 2010. The Brightwater
System will include a treatment plant to provide secondary treatment of
wastewater, pipelines and pump stations to carry wastewater to and from the
plant, and an outfall to discharge the treated wastewater to Puget Sound.
The county executive has selected two locations as the potential site to
build the treatment plant: the Unocal site in Edmonds or the Route 9 site
north of Woodinville in unincorporated Snohomish County.
The Regional Water Quality Committee has
been receiving monthly briefings regarding progress on the Brightwater
project. December’s briefing was an overview of DEIS analysis and
mitigation proposals. “We’ve learned that the cost were different than
originally thought and require close scrutiny,” said Committee Chair
Councilmember Kathy Lambert. Public
comment taken at the meeting will not constitute formal testimony on the
DEIS, but will be an opportunity for elected officials to hear citizen
concerns on the mitigation proposals based on the DEIS.
“A project of this size deserves an
extraordinary review,” said Lambert. “There have been several opportunities
for those living around the potential sites to comment on the project, but I
feel it’s important that the communities that will surround Brightwater have
as many opportunities as possible to ask questions and voice their
concerns.”
Four official public hearings on the
Draft EIS occurred in early December. The comment period for the Draft EIS
closes on January 21, 2003. Written comments may be submitted to:
