Dear friends:
King County is a "home rule" county governed by charter. The charter is our roadmap for good government and it undergoes a review every 10 years. An appointed commission has begun the 5th review of the Charter and they are seeking citizen input on changes that would affect how the county does business. Among the issues that are being discussed by the Commission are the following:
• Should the County Council continue to be elected on a partisan basis or should those elections be changed to non-partisan?
• Should the director of Elections be elected or appointed by the County Executive?
• Should County Council elections be publicly financed?
• Should the Charter be subject to citizen initiatives?
• How relevant are the functions of regional committees?
These are but a few of the many issues that will be on the table for discussion by the Charter Review Commission. They have scheduled a series of outreach meetings to permit citizens to voice their issues and concerns. In the 6th Council District, the meeting will be June 14th at Bellevue Community College from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. For more information, please refer to the flyer from the Charter Review Committee.
Sincerely,
Jane Hague
