Recognizing his efforts working for social and economic justice for all, Metropolitan King County Council Chair Larry Phillips was honored by the Seattle Chapter of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute at their 2005 Awards Banquet. In announcing the award, the 34-year-old human rights organization which was founded as a Black Trade Union, honored Phillips’ dedication to the goals of the organization: Civil rights for all, promotion of living wage jobs and social and economic justice in all communities. “At this time
when the voices of communities of color and organized labor are being
ignored by those in power at the national level, it is important to be
vocal about the work this country still needs to accomplish to level the
playing field and open doors to the American Dream,” said Phillips.
“I’m proud of the work we have done on the County Council
to help get people off the streets and into housing, focus on alternatives
to incarceration, promote the civil rights of employees and maintain strong
union participation in major capital projects such as light rail and Brightwater.”
