WHO MAY APPLY:  These two (2) positions are open to all qualified King County career service employees who are members of the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters holding the same classification as the vacant position, all King County career service employees, all other executive branch regular exempt employees, and current probationary employees who achieved career service status in a previous position and the public. Bargaining unit members will receive first consideration. This recruitment is an effort to fill two (2) career service positions and to create a list of competitive candidates to fill similar vacancies in the Building Services Section that may occur throughout the year.

WORK LOCATION:  Primary work locations for position 0251 are the King County Correctional Facility (downtown Seattle) and the Regional Justice Center (Kent), and the primary work location for position 0236 is the King County Courthouse Complex, however, per section 4.2 of the Joint Crafts Council Contract, management has the right to determine work location.

 

WORK SCHEDULE:  This position is overtime eligible.  Full-time positions work a 40-hour week.  Regular shift for position 0251 is 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Regular shift for position 0236 is 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Work shifts and hours may vary due to maintenance and project requirements.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:  Perform journey-level Carpenter duties including the installation, repair and maintenance of locks, hardware and doors.  

 

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES INCLUDE: 

• Install and repair doors, windows, and related hardware including locking mechanisms, closures, and keying systems in a detention facility, secure courthouse and general office buildings.
• Make and issue keys required for personnel in their use of offices and facilities throughout the County.
• Repair malfunctioning locks; re-key locks to improve building security.
• Inspect key and locking systems for buildings; perform emergency keying and opening services on locks.
• Install, maintain and repair keycard systems with electrician assistance.
• Install and repair automatic door opening systems, electric strikes and panic hardware.
• Respond to after hours and weekend emergencies.
• Repair and maintain finish materials.
• Operate and maintain a variety of locksmith/carpentry hand and power tools and equipment.
• Perform administrative tasks including evaluating work requests; designing and estimating; organizing and scheduling labor, materials and equipment to complete projects.  Perform basic record-keeping including keeping daily logs.  Maintain stock and order materials as needed.
• Instruct semi-skilled helpers.
• Assist in general carpentry and projects as needed when not working as a locksmith.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Completion of a verifiable apprenticeship program or 4 years or more of full-time paid experience as a journey-level Carpenter.
• Journey-level knowledge of and skills in the locksmith trade.
• Demonstrated skill in the use and operation, and care of tools, machinery and equipment used in the carpentry/locksmith trade.
• Knowledge of terminology, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
• Knowledge of qualities, grades, uses and adaptability of various locks and hardware and related materials used in all types of detention and commercial applications.
• Ability to clearly communicate orally and in writing.
• Ability to work independently or with other carpenters, or in a composite team with other tradecrafts.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Candidates must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license or the ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner in a variety of County vehicles.  Final appointment is contingent upon successfully passing thorough Facilities Management Division and Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention (DAJD) background investigations, and a pre-employment physical examination.

 

SELECTION PROCESS:  Applications will be screened for clarity, completeness and qualifications.  The most competitive candidates may be invited to a panel interview and a written and practical exercise.  Finalists may interview with the supervisor.  Reference checks may be conducted prior to any offer of employment.
