SELECTION PROCESS: The most competitive applicants may be invited for a skills assessment on operating equipment, interview, and reference checks. The most competitive applicants are individuals who have experience in operating the following equipment in a road construction environment: backhoe, trackhoe, dozer, grader, front-end loader, slope mower, and road brooms.

SUMMARY OF KING COUNTY BENEFITS: The Equipment Operator position is fully benefited. WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday; 8hr/day, 40hr/week (4/10 schedule in the summer); mandatory overtime and weekends may be required in emergency and workload situations. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible and may be mandatory. Working after-hours and weekends may be required on an emergency basis, during inclement weather, and on special projects. Overtime hours and weekends vary upon business demand, season and weather.

WORK LOCATION: Various locations throughout King County.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Maintenance Section is responsible for providing road maintenance services to associated infrastructure within the unincorporated areas of King County and contract cities in order to maintain and enhance the current condition of roadways and facilities in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner to protect the public’s investment and facilitate safe travel. The Equipment Operator position is skilled work operating heavy road maintenance equipment with complex controls in a safe and efficient manner. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Inspect assigned vehicle and perform minor preventive maintenance and associated manual tasks to correct safety problems as necessary.
• Determine safe and efficient methods of operation of all County equipment.
• Safely operate backhoe, trackhoe, grader, road brooms, slope mowers, roller, and dozer in the maintenance and construction of roads and other public facilities.
• Safely operate a grader of over ten tons in repair and maintenance of roads, shoulders, and other roadway features.
• Safely operate front-end loaders with bucket size of two and one-half to four yards.
• Respond courteously to general public.
• Performs a variety of manual tasks requiring the use of hand tools and hand held power tools as required.
• May be requested to work down in the event of emergencies, equipment failures and repairs, or as needed onsite.
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Possession of a valid WA State Driver’s License and a CDL Class B license.
• Two years of full-time equipment operator experience in a construction work environment.
• Knowledge of Seattle/King County roadways and surrounding street system.
• Knowledge of road building materials.
• Knowledge of road conditions and routes.
• Knowledge of basic survey principles.
• Knowledge of and ability to apply construction safety principles and practices.
• Knowledge of federal, state, county and local environmental regulations related to the operating heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of traffic control methods.
• Basic knowledge of blueprints, plans and specifications.
• Skilled in the use of backhoe, trackhoe, front-end loader, and rollers is required; experience with slope mower, broomtruck, dozer, and grader are desirable

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Possession of a valid Washington State Flagging Certificate, valid CPR and First Aid certifications. Please provide documentation if you possess these items.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S): Must have valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License from the state of Washington at the time of application. As a condition of employment for jobs in this classification, as required by federal regulations, the applicant selected must submit to drug testing and test negative for presence of controlled substances; sign a Consent Form for Release of Information for each employer for the past three (3) years; and successfully pass a background check for Alcohol and Controlled Substances testing, and a CDL background information check. The selected candidate will be required to pass a physical examination prior to employment, which may include an x-ray of the lower back and audiogram.
