WHO MAY APPLY: This position is open to all qualified King County career service employees who are members of the International Union of Operating Engineers (I.U.O.E.), Local 302 King County career service employees, King County regular exempt employees, King County probationary employees who have achieved career service status in a previous position, and the general public. SELECTION PROCESS: The most competitive applicants may be invited for a skills assessment on operating equipment, interview, and reference checks. The most competitive applicants are individuals who have experience in operating the following equipment in a road construction environment: backhoe, trackhoe, dozer, grader, front-end loader, slope mower, and road brooms.

SUMMARY OF KING COUNTY BENEFITS: The Equipment Operator position is fully benefited. WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday; 8hr/day, 40hr/week (4/10 schedule in the summer); mandatory overtime and weekends may be required in emergency and workload situations. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible and may be mandatory. Working after-hours and weekends may be required on an emergency basis, during inclement weather, and on special projects. Overtime hours and weekends vary upon business demand, season and weather.

WORK LOCATION: Various locations throughout King County.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Maintenance Section is responsible for providing road maintenance services to associated infrastructure within the unincorporated areas of King County and contract cities in order to maintain and enhance the current condition of roadways and facilities in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner to protect the public’s investment and facilitate safe travel. The Equipment Operator position is skilled work operating heavy road maintenance equipment with complex controls in a safe and efficient manner. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S): Must have valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License from the state of Washington at the time of application. As a condition of employment for jobs in this classification, as required by federal regulations, the applicant selected must submit to drug testing and test negative for presence of controlled substances; sign a Consent Form for Release of Information for each employer for the past three (3) years; and successfully pass a background check for Alcohol and Controlled Substances testing, and a CDL background information check. The selected candidate will be required to pass a physical examination prior to employment, which may include an x-ray of the lower back and audiogram.

UNION MEMBERSHIP: Positions in this classification will be represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 302.
