WORK LOCATION: Link Light Rail Operations & Maintenance Facility located on Airport Way in Seattle (across from Tully’s roasting plant).

WORK SCHEDULE: This position is eligible for overtime pay if scheduled. The normal workweek is Monday through Friday, but scheduled hours may vary including weekends, night and holiday hours, as necessary.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES INCLUDE: The Rail Section will be responsible for providing rail service on a 13.9 mile double track system from downtown Seattle to the Sea-Tac Airport.   This position will provide track maintenance and perform a variety of maintenance duties, inspection, repair and replacement.  Other duties include, but are not limited to:

• Inspect, diagnose, repair, maintain, and/or replace running rails, restraining rails, fasteners, ballast, switch components, crossings, concrete and timber ties, and all other components associated with an embedded, direct fixation, and ballasted track structure
• Operate hi-rail vehicles, small cranes and other vehicles used in track maintance and inspection
• Use rail saws, rail drills, portable ballast tampers, and other specialized tools and equipment to perform inspection, maintenance and repair tasks
• Set up work-zone traffic control areas; flag trackway to provide safe rail work zones
• Manually operate switch machines under revenue and non-revenue conditions
• Prioritize emergency maintenance tasks in the absence of on-site supervision
• Record and document maintenance and diagnostic data
• Assist other trades as necessary and respond to emergency calls as necessary;
• Perform snow and ice removal

 

QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent; two-years experience as Class I  

railroad/contractor maintenance of way laborer including experience operating hi-rail and crane equipment. 

Advanced knowledge of and journey level skill in track and structures maintenance work for electrified

light rail systems or equivalent skill in a comparable field.  Applicants must be able to meet on-going

educational and training requirements and maintain certification and complete basic and advanced

principle classes of track maintenance certification.

• Knowledge of FRA Track Safety Standards Part 213 Subparts A-F and APTA Standards for Rail Transit Track Inspection and Maintenance
• Knowledge of associated hardware, manuals, procedures, parts catalogs and other pertinent documentation
• Knowledge of and skill in working with computer software and hardware associated with maintenance work orders and assignments
• Knowledge of industrial safety standards and procedures including working with small cranes and lifting equipment
• Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics and drawings
• Skill in oral and written communication including reading, writing and following instructions
• Skill in problem solvingand analyzing data to solve common and complex problems
• Demonstrated mechanical skills including ability to properly use hand and power tools
• Able to operate radio and telephone communication systems in compliance with regulations and procedures
• Able to establish and maintain good working relationships and to work efficiently in a team environment and ability to deal proactively and sensitively with customers

Licensing/Certification Requirements

• Washington Class B CDL with endorsements or the ability to obtain one within 3 months of hire
• Ability to obtain Hi-Rail, Forklift, Aerial Lift, First-Aid/CPR and other certifications

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and in inclement weather. 

Physical ability to be mobile, perform heavy manual labor, exert physical effort while standing, walking, or lifting materials, tools and objects weighting up to 100 pounds, such as paving breakers, joint bars, ties, and tamping tools.  Able to work in crowded and tight spaces, tunnel, and aerial structures.
