Job Description: Ensure compliance with a broad range of current environmental codes, regulations, and policies. Coordinate environmental projects, and provide technical assistance and information requiring a broad base knowledge of environmental principles and issues as they apply to Solid Waste Division facilities and activities. Duties include:
- Develop, implement, maintain and monitor programs to ensure that Solid Waste Division facilities and activities comply with permit conditions, environmental policies and programs.
- Periodically conduct internal inspections or audits to ensure environmental and permit compliance.
- Conduct internal investigations on matters relating to environmental performance and permit compliance and initiate corrective actions as required.
- Prepare regular reports to management on program objectives and accomplishments.
- Provide technical assistance for permit and environmental regulatory compliance issues and other environmental management activities.
- Track permit submittals and renewals and participate in permit application process.
- Assist in development and modification of facility permit and operating plan documents and other compliance related documentation.
- Resolve environmental management and compliance problems involving staff and procedures in a diplomatic manner.
- Investigate public complaints related environmental compliance issues and coordinate the preparation of necessary responses.
- Participate on and/or manage Division teams, in particular the Division’s environmental management system team.
- Participate, as needed, on regulatory agency inspections.
- Work closely with Operations Section supervisors and Engineering Services Section staff.
- Provide or coordinate environmental training and education as needed.
Requirements:
- At least three years experience in environmental management.
- BA or BS in environmental field or equivalent, or work experience indicating BA/BS proficiency.
- Leadership skills – ability to collaborate and motivate while setting clear direction.
- Knowledge of environmental sciences and basic environmental engineering principles.
- Knowledge of environmental protection programs, laws, regulations and policy processes.
- Knowledge of data collection, analysis and interpretation techniques.
- Knowledge of federal, Washington state and local environmental regulations.
- Knowledge of pollution prevention and waste minimization practices.
- Knowledge of computerized data management systems.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of Environmental Management Systems standards and implementation.
Highly Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of and experience working with solid waste facilities, operating systems and methods.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- A valid Washington State Driver’s license or the ability to travel to remote work locations with limited public transportation is required.
- The selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment physical examination.
