WORK LOCATION:  King County Courthouse, 516 – 3rd Ave, Downtown Seattle, WA.

 

WORK SCHEDULE:  This position is a 35-hour-per-week work schedule. The workweek is normally Monday through Friday.

 

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:  This is an at-will position and is exempt from Career Service.  King County prohibits smoking in the workplace.  Benefits are available including Public Employees Retirement System, health (medical, dental, vision) insurance, free bus pass, and deferred compensation.  Acceptable proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States are required by federal immigration law.

 

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:  Legislative Secretary performs technical and complex administrative work as well as a variety of clerical, reception, and administrative duties in support of the King County Auditor’s Office staff.  The work includes: answering incoming phones, referring the public to other County agencies, sorting and distributing mail, processing outgoing mail, ordering supplies and maintaining office invoices and expenses, managing office libraries, filing, copying, typing/word processing, proofreading letters and reports for publication, conducting research, collecting and analyzing data, performing mathematical calculations, scheduling appointments and meetings, taking and transcribing notes and/or meeting minutes, preparing professional correspondence, and performing other administrative tasks. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  The position typically requires an Associate’s degree or equivalent business school certificate and three years of progressive experience in administrative support, one of which must be in a government environment.  Additional experience in a legislative or government auditing environment may substitute for some higher education.  Major required skills include:  extensive knowledge and proficiency with MS Word and Excel; knowledge of proper English grammar, usage, and spelling; ability to handle multiple tasks and interruptions effectively; pleasant phone manner, strong customer service orientation, and a courteous attitude toward public and fellow employees; good interpersonal communication skills; math skills to tabulate, summarize, compile, and compute data; and an ability to understand departmental functions and County regulations.  Working experience with MS Access is desirable.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to work in an office environment; sit for extended periods of time while working on a computer; and must coordinate visual and muscular dexterity to operate standard office equipment.
