WORK LOCATION: Various Solid Waste Division facilities located throughout King County.

 

WORK SCHEDULE: Employees are expected to be available to work at any King County Solid Waste facility including Vashon Island.  Candidates must be available for work day, swing or graveyard shift. 

 

JOB SUMMARY: Employees in this classification assist in the operation and maintenance of Solid Waste Transfer Stations by providing a high level of customer service to transfer station users, compacting waste, loading and moving refuse trailers within a confined space in public area, monitoring the area for safety and efficiency and performing general clean-up, landscaping and station maintenance tasks.  

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

• Assist customers to safely and efficiently park and unload vehicles.  Monitor and control activities.
• Screen for hazardous and unacceptable materials and take appropriate action.
• Respond to on-site accidents, emergencies and hazardous spills.
• Operate bulldozer, front end loaders, pre-load compactors and stationary backhoes.
• Determine tonnage before and during loading and compacting to prevent trailer over loads.
• Drive yard trucks that pull empty semi trailers into chutes and full trailers out to parking areas through confined public areas.
• Provide yard and facility cleaning and upkeep.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge and experience operating backhoes and heavy equipment
• Skill in care and operation of hand tools
• Strong customer service skills
• Oral and written communication skills

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• At the time of appointment, the candidate must possess a valid Washington State Drivers License or be able to travel between stations during the course of work.  Offers for employment will be contingent upon verification of valid Washington State Drivers License or valid and reliable means of transportation between work locations.
• Offers of employment will be contingent upon the completion of a pre-employment physical.
• Applicants must exhibit the physical ability to operate heavy equipment, perform heavy physical labor, and use a two-inch fire hose to clean facility.

 

 

The selected candidate will be required to pass a physical examination and an offer of employment will be contingent upon verification of a valid Washington State Driver's License.

 

UNION MEMBERSHIP: Positions in this classification are represented by Teamsters, Local 174.
