| The growing operation adheres to the following King County Parks and Recreation Mission statement: "We enhance the quality of life and strengthen communities through parks, natural areas, recreation programs, environmentally-sound land management and partnerships."
The Greenhouse/Nursery provides employment opportunities which are accessible and non-discriminatory, reasonable accommodations are always provided for individuals. It provides supported employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. The program is a national model. Most of the structures and fixtures at the nursery and greenhouse are comprised of recycled goods. For example, our shade houses are made from salvaged soccer goals and our aluminum-potting table was once part of a tool crib at Boeing. The base for some of our roadways is constructed from Kingdome debris. Our rolling tables were discovered in a dumpster at the Southcenter Bon Marché warehouse. All of the stainless steel tables came from the former concession stands at the Kingdome. The soils used to transplant and grow material is also recycled. Part of the potting soil mixture is Tagro from the Port of Tacoma. The biosoilds are baked and virus free. The use of Tagro enables our operation to reduce the cost of professional soil and provide fertilizer all at the same time. The best part is: The plant material absolutely loves it!
