Training Opportunities King County pools (see schedule at right) offer a variety of Red Cross, www.seattleredcross.org training classes.

Lifeguard Training (LGT) at King County Pools

The purpose of American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training course is to teach Lifeguard candidates the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies.

The course content and activities prepare candidates to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.

  • Basic prerequisites for ARC Lifeguard Training are: Lifeguard Training Course, Training at KCAC-(no classes currently offered)
  • 15 years of age before the scheduled day of class.
  • Ability to swim non-stop for 500 yards using
  • 200 yards of crawl,
  • 100 yards of breaststroke, and
  • 200 yards of either crawl or breaststroke.
  • Ability to swim 20 yards using crawl or breaststroke,
    surface dive to a depth of 7 - 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object,
    return to the surface, and
    swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object - legs only.

King County pools offer the Northwest Lifeguard Preparation Course (NW Prep or Prep) along with ARC Lifeguard Training. This course prepares prospective lifeguard candidates for employment with King County Parks Aquatics.

Water Safety Instructor Training (WSI) at King County Pools

The purpose of the ARC Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course is to train instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross swimming and water safety courses.

Basic prerequisites for WSI are:

  • 16 years of age before the scheduled end of the class.
  • Possession of ARC Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) card issued within one year or ARC Instructor
  • Authorization. (Seattle Red Cross, www.seattleredcross.org, has regularly scheduled classes.)
  • Successful completion of pre-course written and water skills tests. These tests can be explained when you call the pool to register.

Currently there are no classes being offered.
