Urban Tree Salvage Program Every year mature trees are removed from King County parks, campgrounds and recreation areas because damage from disease or other causes has made them hazardous to park users or property. When trees come down in these areas the County must pay a tree service hauling and tip fees to remove the trees or cut them up for firewood. King County?s new Urban Tree Salvage Program will provide an alternative to paying disposal costs and burning waste wood. By milling lumber from downed trees on site and using the wood for park improvements, the project will help us avoid costs associated with buying wood for structures such as boardwalks, fences, parking lot barriers, benches, and kiosks. Moreover, by milling salvaged wood, the County will avoid the negative environmental impacts associated with disposing of waste wood through burning or in land fills. Large pieces of wood can be salvaged for use in wood handicrafts, furniture or building materials. The wood from even common Northwest native trees such as madrone, alder and big leaf maple is surprisingly beautiful. To learn how the wood from salvaged trees is used, visit the Urban Tree Salvage Expo web page This project is made possible in part by a grant from Washington Department of Natural Resources with funds from the USDA Forest Service's Urban and Community Forestry Program.
